First they do the screen and if it comes back positive they recommend you do the glucose test, where you drink the orange drink. They will factor in your risk factors - weight, history, race, etc., but I am pretty sure they will always recommend that you do the glucose test. With that said, it is not 'necessary' in my opinion. My experience with both my pregnancies was that I did the screen and it was positive. I did not go for the glucose test, because based on my history, race, age, weight, etc. I figured my results would come back positive from the test. So I proactively watched what I ate, and even monitored my blood sugars with the finger pricks. Both times I was able to maintain positive blood sugars in my pregnancies. The outcome is the same - drink the orange drink and it comes back positive they have you monitor. So I decided instead of putting all that sugar into my system, that I would just treat my body as if it would have a problem with the sugar. So, no, I don't think the test is necessary, however the screening part is, so you know how much at risk you are of having gestational diabetes. But you can manage it with diet. This was my case, and everyone is different.

I totally disagree with Mystic. I believe that ALL pregnant
women should be tested for gestational diabetes.. The
OB/gyn must know the likelihood of a problem. Glucose level
should be monitored during the entire pregnancy. It is a very
simple test, so why take a chance ?

High blood levels of glucose can cause several problems, including frequent urination, excessive thirst, hunger, fatigue, weight loss, and blurry vision. However, because type 2 diabetes develops slowly, some people with high blood sugar experience no symptoms at all. How to treat diabetes naturally https://tr.im/ZPtKr

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes:

Increased thirst
Increased urination
Weight loss in spite of increased appetite
Fatigue
Nausea
Vomiting

Patients with type 1 diabetes usually develop symptoms over a short period of time, and the condition is often diagnosed in an emergency setting.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes:

Increased thirst
Increased urination
Increased appetite
Fatigue
Blurred vision
Slow-healing infections
Impotence in men

If you think you have diabetes i think you should have a checkup and speak with your doctor just in case.

YES!

The reason that they do this is so that they can test for Diabetes while you are preggo. Gestational Diabetes is not something that you want to mess with. It can have some serious side effects on both the mother and the child! Granted this particular diabetes most times is over by the time you have the baby, it can sometimes morph into full blown diabetes after you have the child.

well, yes.. diabetes can cause serious health issues for you or your unborn child. It can even lead to diabetes post-partum and things as bad as fetal brain damage.

One gross drink won't kill you.

Also.. they have other options.. some kind of glucose pill and you can just do like 48hrs worth of the pin-***** tests.
