I livein Colorado. I found a black widow in one of the offices I clean. She was outside in the entry way. It has been below zero the past day or two, so I was very surprized that she was even still alive. I have her in a jar right now. I wet the paper towel that is in there with her that I caught her on. Not like wet the whole thing, just a spot and I make sure some water is in the bottom of the jar... just drops. But it is winter time! No bugs out... except for her! hahahaha She is a beautiful spider! Didn't know it was a widow until I was trying to catch it, then I seen how black it was and once I got her in the jar I seen the hour glass. Only black widows are THAT black! It is so pretty! Do they hybernate? Aren't they suppose to make a coocoon or something? What do I feed her? I don't think the pet store sells flies! :) Crickets are too big. Is she like a tarantula and able to go a month without food? If any one can help, I would appreciate it!
Thanks!

Double check if she is a Black Widow with pictures.
Let her have some place to set up a web. You can't catch any food when your that size of spider without a web.
Some stores sell gnats and flies (not common around where I live, but smaller then crickets). Store some times have different types of Crickets from others ( but might as well go fly hunting).
Maybe you can catch some food on your own if you can get a Black Widow spider.
Try introduceing food about once a week,.. some things eat every day,.. some every 2-3 days,.. some a week,.. some a month,,... some a season.
Hopefully someone knows more then me.

Colorado has laws about knowingly keeping living creatures which are a menace/deadly to humans.
It is illegal for you to keep her.
If she bites you, the medical bills will be quiet staggering. More than likely you will live, but with the amount of pain she causes, you will wish you had died.
By the way, Black Widow Spiders are NOT native to Colorado. You have captured an invading species. It would be best to turn her over to proper athorities, and let them deal with a potential problem, since she may have made a nest.

P.S. If she bites someone else, you WILL be liable, and could very likely be held liable for not reporting an invading species.

Spiders eat any live insect, I'm sure you know this. Have you tried to look into trees for bugs, if you have any in your yard they could be on the inside of the bark. Get a library book at your school, maybe the science teacher could help with your answers.

Why would you want to keep that as a pet? It could kill you. You should either kill it or let it go. It can't get food if its in a jar and it doesn't need a human to keep it alive. Please release it into the woods or kill it before it bites you and you either lose a body part or your life.

I am afraid all I can tell you is that they require insects to eat. They do not eat lettuce or anything like it in their diets. Best go find some flies!

I don't really know. I'm terrified of spiders but you could call your local pet store. Most of them do sell small crickets. My friend gets these small ones for her lizards, but I do not know what they are called. Your a brave Chick...I would of screamed and ran! lol.
