My suggestion since you will have to go by train is to go to the Yuzawa area. From Tokyo you take the Jouetsu shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa station. If you catch the earliest shinkansen, you can take it directly to Gala Yuzawa station, which is directly below Gala Yuzawa ski resort. The Yuzawa area is surrounded by many ski resorts, some good, some small. My favortite in the Echigo-Yuzawa area is Jouetsu Kokusai resort. To get to Jouetsu Kokusai, you get off the Shinkansen at Echigo Yuzawa and take the local train to Jouetsu Kokusai Resort. The local train stops in front of one of the resort lodges. Another option is to take a taxi to Echigo Yuzawa. Gala Yuzawa and surrounding resorts are close enough for day trips.
My favorite resort(s) in the Nagano area is Hakuba 47 & Hakuba Gouryu (2 resorts on 1 mountain). Access is a bit more troublesome. You take the Nagano Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano, then take a 70 min bus ride to the Hakuba area. From the bus station, you take shuttles or taxis to the resorts in the area.
If you want a weekend package, it is best to visit a travel agency and have them book you hotel, train and any extras. Travel agencies ae always in and around major train stations, and the ski brochures are dispayed outside and are free. Across Travel in Shibuya has staff that speaks English and can help you out.
Sometimes we crash in Karaoke places until they kick us out and then we sleep in the parking lot waiting for the lifts to open.
On the way home to Tokyo we stopped at an onsen for a very warm and relaxing bath, massage and some sake.
Of course the best snow Japan has in in Hokkaido.

Don't rule out skiing in the Tohoku area, resorts like Zao, Appi and Hachimantai are definitely worth consideration. They don't get the attention that the Japan Alps and Hokkaido resorts do, but they have a charm all their own. Appi is very slick and modern, with happening nightlife. Zao and Hachimanti are the places to go if you like tree or back country skiing. "The Wall" at Zao is near vertical and will challenge any skier. If you could time it right to take the steam-locomotive from Koriyama to the Inawashiro-ko resort, and then come back down on the line that runs from Aizu-Wakamatsu down through Nikko-that would be a great trip. However the lifts at Inawashiro sometimes get closed down by wind whipping accross the lake-brrrr.

Well, you're really missing out if you don't visit Hokkaido's ski resorts.
If you're thinking about Nagano, I'd recommend the Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen area. They've excellent resorts there. For more information, go to the link here: http://www.japanspecialists.com/index.html
By the way, if you're in Niigata, you might as well travel to Hokkaido.

I actually have a e book that proves evolution with good information, while I actually have by no ability seen any information (except man made fairy thoughts), that God exists. My e book became written in extra recent circumstances by persons who've shown the international isn't flat and the international is billion of years previous. In end, i'd pick to say that a in good structure ideas set will be to admit that we as a species will be extra useful off if we purely admitted that we do purely not comprehend if any God truly exists. no longer declaring that one doesn't , yet truly, there truly isn't adequate authentic information to educate one does exist. To believe otherwise is organic hopeful fantasy.
