If you were to ask me, I would say the 360. First off, the obvious, its a WHOLE lot cheaper. Secondly, the PS3 uses blu-ray disks so that limits what you can play on your PS3. Some of the features on the 360 are almost exactly the same as the PS3 if not better and like i said before, its cheaper and your more likely to find a 360. And one more tiny thing. If your a GTA fan, they're coming out with a new one in October '07. Well i heard the GTA stopped its contract with playstation so....its something to think about.

For the most part, the PS3. Sony has most of the developers and there will be no end to the games for it. The technology is far superior and, dispite the sticker shock, is actually quite a bargin. (Sony is reportedly losing $50-$100 on every sale. I'm sure the motion picture industry is making it worth their while, so don't cry too hard for them.)
Really, the only advantage of the XBox 360 is XBox Live. While the PS3 is online capable, it is yet to be seen weather the online gaming community that emerges is as complete and vast as XBox Live's. I really don't think it will be even in the same leauge, personaly. Don't get me wrong, I hate XBox but credit where credit is due.
*edit* To correct an earlier answer, the PS3 plays DVD-ROMs as well as Blue Ray DVD's. The PS3 games aren't even in Blu Ray yet. You are not limited as to what it can play
CD's, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and Blu Ray DVD are all supported formats.
