Usually you can hear a slight hissing sound when preparing to light a pilot. Sometimes not though.
The gas company should be putting an odorant in the gas to give it that noxious smell. Are you smelling the gas coming out? If not, check to make sure that the gas valve for the heater is open, and that the valve at your gas meter or tank outside is not shut off.

You will probably have a small red button to press and hold while you are lighting the pilot light , and this may hiss but will stop as soon as you let go and the flame stays alight

If the gas has been off all summer, it may take a while (few minuets) to get the air out. If the Gas company had you shut down, they have a plug in the meter

All mild beer, Zima, wine coolers, and those malt liquor liquids like Mike's complicated Lemonade are sissy liquids. Mike's is okay in case you combine it with a shot of vodka. you're able to dirnk a British Ale, a German lager, or a micro brew. P.S. by no potential positioned fruit in a lager.

Most units do this. It's normal.
If you have any qualms, nearly ALL gas utility companies in the US will come out and help you with your gas appliances for free. It's good PR for them, and a safety issue for everyone.

Depends on your heater. Probably yes, but ask someone knowledgeable to check it for you. No point in taking any risks.
