You can try to get it running, or buy the new computer that has the potential and comes with Vista, in January.
Look, you may not have read all the test results, but, Vista really needs 2 GIGABYTES of RAM to run almost as efficiently as does the Linux that Microsoft Corporation runs on the 45,000 computers at Redmond Labs, Hotmail.com, Microsoft.com, MSN.com, and all Corporate routers, firewalls, and networks.
But, for programs, all the ones 'included' in the retail computers are only 'TRIAL' versions, which you have to pay retail for, within THIRTY (30) DAYS!!!
For existing computers, I would really recommend you try one of the 811 FREE and OPEN CDroms, such as:

go on to www.microsoft.com/vista it will tell you
to buy the home version is going to cost $160.00 upgrade from XP
I have been testing Vista for over two month now. another up grade on windows XP 64 with a few sweeteners... I am not impressed with it and won't be moving to it for the price it's going to be..
look around there is better opperating systems out there.. for FREE cheaper if you want support and free software to go with it
do a search for Novell SLED u'll be supprised what u find
plus you can run this opperating software from a DVD without installing it on your computer and run programes and surf the internet at the same time :)

Microsoft provides an "Upgrade Advisor" which checks to see if your computer is capable of running Vista:
