I just started a new job 1 month ago. I work in a small branch office with a total of 3 people as office staff and 3 in and out people. About 2 weeks ago another new girl started as office staff too. Our positions are equal. At first I assumed that her failure to "jump in" was the fact she was so new. Now I'm just annoyed.
She sits at her desk and does "busy work" on the computer all day. She uses this as an excuse not to answer the phone sometimes. She takes super long breaks (20 min) where she just "hangs out" with our in and out people but when she leaves the office she says she has to ask so and so a question and she'll be right back. She was actually filing her nails while with a client today. She does all of this when our supervisor is out of the office.
They don't even have this girl doing deposits yet (something I did on my first day). She just doesn't take initiative. I had decided to give the issues time to see if they resolved themselves but............continued

now the situation has complicated itself.
Most days the stacks files on my desk are 10 deep and fixing files isn't my primary job. I also deal with clients (past, present and future) etc. The point is that because she wasn't doing anything I asked her to do some filing or told her to answer the phone a couple of times. Well, as it turns out while I was playing "nice" and not complaining to my supervisor she was complaining about me. Today my supervisor nicely reminded me that we are equals and that I am not her boss and cannot instruct her to do anything. I was surprised by this and responded that I had simply asked her to do these things. I didn't mention that she lazy and I was just trying to get some work done.
Should I go to my boss and explain all this? I don't want it to look like I'm retaliating. She really is lazy.

How is she getting you in trouble? Are you having to compensate for her lack of work, or being held responsible for it?
Just the fact that she doesn't have as much responsibility as you tells me they already know of the problem.Small offices have a way of knowing things fast, and her customers are probably not happy with her either. She's probably going to be expecting a good talking to, at least, very soon. Continue to do your best work, never cover up for her, and she's going to take care of herself very soon.

My first business class lesson - CYA. Cover Your A..
Do your job correctly, efficiently, and make sure your bases are covered at all times. Do not leave any room for her to have something blamed or dumped back to you. It is hard and extremely frustrating I know. You may have an opportunity to take on a project or new responsibilities from your supervisor, volunteer. The 'other' girl can take over some of what you are doing since she has been there a while now. Hopefully, the super will see that things are not getting done. Let her have the rope to hang herself - just protect yourself in the process.
Be the better person but don't get walked all over.
Good Luck

tell your boss this problem and how much you want to be there, your boss should be keeping a eye out on both of you to make sure there aren't any problems, there has got to be others that see what going on, speak up!!

No dont tell your boss anything and dont ask her to do anything.
just do your job and dont pay any attention to her. by engaging your doing what she wants you to do. she can tell these things bother you. best thing you could do is give her time she'll hang herself!!!!
