Back in the old days they were called standard or stick shift. Now nearly every car comes standard with an automatic transmission, so now standard would be automatic. There are 3 types of transmissions today, Manual shift, automatic shift, and one some call Auto-Stick. You can put the auto-stick and drive and forget it or you can shift it through the gears manually.

Most people in my area just call it a 5 speed. It is a car with a manual transmission, the "straight eights" were years ago, and "standard" is also an old expression.

And "old school" term is "standard transmission" simply because manual transmissions where the STANDARD transmission. Automatic transmissions were not even an option until the 1950's I believe. (I think Cadillac was the pioneer of the auto...)

I think what you mean is in terms of conversation. Most Americans drive autos so when given a manual transmission car, the question is "Can you drive a stick-shift?" or "Can you handle a stick?" or something like that...

I just call it a car with a manual transmission. Not a specific name for the car, just like if it had an automatic.
