I myself have an iPod Video. My kids are mesmerized by it and I decided to get them each a nano today. (I decided against the shuffle since you can't choose the song without a lot of hassle, plus they love scrolling thru screens with their gadgets)
I went to the store to get them and saw the Zune Video -- which I feel is awesome because you can click down down vs roll the roundabout flutter scroll thing that apple has that I just can't get down and is VERY frustrating! Just give me up, down, and right, left please!!!
Also the Zune has pretty menus where iPod has just white menu.
The Creative Zen looks like you get a lot for your money too. For instance, I could have gotton the kids a 1 Gig Creative Zen for $89 instead of the $149 I spent on each of the Nano's.... However, I know that they only think that "iPod's" are cool.
Plus we happen to have iPod speaker systems throughout the house.. so compatibility made the choice.
The only down side to not getting iPod brand is that it seems all the speakers are made for just docking the ipod.
As far as which type. I got the video, but it's not necessary to watch videos... however, it holds 30G!! So you get 22 more Gig for only $50 more. But it is a lot bigger.
Video Pros: Large size makes it not as easy to lose; stores much more songs, pix, etc. Watching videos may come in handy if bored at airport, etc.
Photos at a size you can actually see
Cons: Bulky and heavier, not as easy to slip into pocket as a light Nano,
Expensive, just not necessary for someone who doesn't have a 40 year music collection like me.
However, if you do, you should get the video.
On top of 40 years of songs, I have audio books, PodCasts, TV Shows, etc.

I recommend the IPOD video with the bigger hard drive.
The interface and the control plus the amount of
accesories for it. I'm not a huge fan of macs but the
Ipod converted me. It is one of the coolest players out
there. I also love the way it feels in your hand. It is light
but not too light, it's got a heft but not enough to be
heavy.
Plus with 30-60 Gigs depending on the model you have tons
of room for music. I also assume the will support it longer than
the cheaper nano. They just dropped the ipod mini last year.
Much to the chargrin of those that had the now defunct device.
There are other Mp3 players but all they really seem to offer
is a bigger hard drive. But it's still not an ipod. I know someone who had one a year ago. And he finally sold it and got an Ipod.
Since they solved the ipod battery problem I heartily recommend it
to everyone.

dude, don't buy an ipod buy something from the creative zen range, these have all the functions of an ipod but way better, i have the creative zen vision M i bought mine from eBay for like 2/3 the price it normally retails at.
its equivalent is the ipod video, the zen plays more video formats such as avi, the software is ten time better, i can has removable hard disk features... it has a built in FM radio, it has a microphone as well as a 30 GB or 60 GB hard drive.. it also plays more formats of music files... in short an ipod is just popular , a zen is much better trust me! i have the zen vision m and my friends have the ipod video all of them wish they had my zen. the basic mp3 players are better to mostly because the have built in radios and the microphone whereas the ipod doesn't also you can get the zen range in like 10 different colours. including the traditional black and white colors offered by ipod also it doesn't look to different from an ipod. have a look at some of the products:
http://creative.com/products/welcome.asp?category=213 seriously if you want More value for money go for one of these!

i highly recommend the Creative Zen V Plus mp3 player. for $10 less than an ipod nano, you get way more! photos, music, videos, fm radio, voice recording, and you don't have to use itunes. you can use cheaper or free sites for downloading music like napster and yahoo music.

i admire mine. i've got had it for over a million 3 hundred and sixty 5 days and a a million/2 and in no way had a situation. I even washed/dried it as quickly as, the battery died, yet all i had to do replaced into purchase a sparkling one for $15 and replace it, and it became ideal on. i think of it quite is far extra constructive than the nano. you get FM tuner, video, %., plus you may checklist your voice or stay from the radio. mines in no way freezes. i think of it quite is the human beings who do no longer understand the thank you to apply it. save your funds and purchase a sansa.

iPod Video. It's niceto take advantage of a reduced SRP. It sells for about $250. Plus it plays videos and games, and has an innovative search feature.
