when they're poor? This is a wierd concept to me b/c I live in Dallas. You can buy a brand new house here for about $120,000 and you can find a cheap apartment for $400 or $500. I don't think you can buy a trailer house in CA or NY for 120,000. I know their minimum wage is higher, but when I was making $11/hr here I still sometimes had issues. I can't imagine having to survive on 7 or 8 there. So how do poor people survive in expensive places like this?

Cheap rent. (Everything else costs the pretty much the same). I have (in college) lived in a VW bus, cabover camper, at a friends house, in a garage apt., with 4 roommates, and in the bad part of town. (Not all at the same time). If you can wiggle into a cheap place to live you will have all the money you need. Parenthetically, I would like to apologize for all the parentheses.

LOL! Oh how I wish I had enough guts to leave Ca! You are right it's hard to live here, even in the most remote of places in Ca, as we do. My husband brings in $30 an hour and we still are struggling... granted we decided that when we had kids I should stay home and I am here now. THAT my dear makes it harder in this state. But we get the better weather than you all do (no ice storms for instance) so I guess really coming from Ca we get what we pay for.

it's tough... that's why bigger cities like NYC and LA have more housing projects. and if you look at census data, poverty issues, literacy issues, and disability percentages are all higher in cities like those... which also consequently have a higher immigrant population.

so to your question, i suppose i also pose a question: how is it that when your everyday, run-of-the-mill people are working for 7 and 8 dollars/hour and are struggling to make ends meet, how do the immigrants do it making SIGNIFICANTLY less than that? some of those people make three and four dollars an hour... figure that out.
