When it comes to PhD programs, rules vary a bit, but do not count on any of your courses transferring.

You cannot simply "transfer" into another PhD program at another university. You must apply to another program, and be accepted into that program.

Here is what you should do.

Contact the directors of graduate studies in the specific departments at each university to which you would like to apply. Email would probably be best, but phone calls would work as well. Tell them that you are dissatisfied with your university, and would like information about whether your coursework could transfer into their PhD program.

In many cases, you will have to reapply, sending scores as well as letters of recommendation. It is possible, however, that some graduate programs might partially waive these requirements. But it is not something you should expect.

Best wishes to you.

EDIT:
In the US, PROGRAM means DEPARTMENT -- in your case, in the same subject, but at another university.

transferring is typically a bad idea, but since it is your first semester it might not be too disasterous for you. First, most schools will not accept transfer credits. However, a few generous schools will accept small amounts, like 6 credits, if you basically beg them and your new school has equivilants. I would not count on anything transferring if i were you though. And second, yes, you will have to send recommendations letters, gre scores, transcripts from your undergrad school and alabama for this semster, etc. it will be a huge pain in your behind. i would not suggest you do this unless alabama has become hell for you.

Yes most likely you will have to send the same information to the school you are transfering to, because they must have certain information on file for you. They will also need recommendations etc to ensure that you meet the standards of their admissions...Good luck on your transfer...hope this helps!

you should get the credits...whether they count towards new graduation requirements, that you won't know until you are accepted.
