I hate to be the pessimist about a well loved series of films but if the original Star Wars failed in 1977 there would of course have been no sequels. I wonder if Lucas had anticipated the success and had any initial plans for the sequels.I recall reading an interview with Lucas when he started that he thought he would be remembered only for American Graffiti and that Star Wars success took him by surprise.

The director said because the technology was not available back then. He had to make the technology himself for the star wars movies he made back then. The technology is now available and since people were so queries he had to make the movies. That is why.

I think George Lucas wanted to replicate the old movie serials of his childhood by starting out the story seemingly in the middle.
Apparently he wrote out the whole backstory before though but with the intention of starting in the "middle" of the story.

It's easy! he is a genious ...It is the best movie ever...but it has never been done like this ever in movie series history.
