*actually* I once heard that because of bad medical science or some odd, when a person died they set up a cord and a bell on the tombstone. So if the person woke in the middle of the night, buried alive, they could pull the cord and ring the bell. A person was set to watch the tombstone at all times, especially at night. Their shift came to be called the "grave yard" because they worked in the grave yard, at night.

Think about it- late at night- spooky graveyard-its dark outside- and- when I worked "the graveyard shift", all the goons came out, (some prefer to call them drunks) anyway, if you have nothing to do some late evening, venture out to your local waffle house or 24 hr restaurant. You will understand what I mean.

long time ago before backhoes , grave diggers worked at night so funerals could be performed in the morning. with the death rate before modern medicine , it was an all night job sometimes.
