well, if you are playing for a team you can ask the coach who he wants you to block then you go up there and block him.
if you don't play for a team then you could get a reletive to help you get better at defense.

well for starters when you are guarding the man with the ball shout Ball Ball Ball!. When your denying shout deny. Also communicate well with your team. Although your working on getting better, defense is the true test of team work. Call for help and say you got their help. Also it is important that once a shot goes up you shout shot! and box out the closest man even if he is at the three point line. Whereever you box him out will help your team. Also if you get beat, dont chase the man chase him to a spot and meet him there. Practice running then turning so that you can take a charge, meet him, or at least change his direction which will slow him down.

I can only answer as a guard on perimeter D:
1) Don't lean forward; lean slightly backward when defending the dribble;
2) Beat the dribbler to "the spot" where he's headed by sliding your feet over;
3) Watch your opponent, not the ball; the hip is a good place to watch;
4) For players who like to crossover, time the crossover and go for the ball at the finishing hand at the same time they make the dribble;
5) If you're quick enough, swipe at an exposed ball if it's not moving; don't swipe if they expose but like to move the ball around;
6) Figure out your opponent's game, and make him one-sided: if he can shoot threes, make him drive; if he can dribble but not shoot, play the pass; if he has a weak hand, force him to that hand; basically, exploit any weaknesses (i.e. he/she leaves the ball unprotected when they spin) by taking away their strengths.

dont cross your legs when moving instead slide. keep your arms up to prevent passing, to cause him to thumble on his dribble and to prevent shooting. try to lead them to the out of bounds, weak hand and trap areas. dont always try to block the shot or steal and dont be put down if a pass is made its impossible to prevent EVERY pass instead make your presence felt and be intimidating and let them know theyre gonna be in for a long night
