In Mexico a torta is a sandwich. and burritos and tacos are not sandwiches.
In other Latin American countries a torta is something else. Like in Argentina a torta is a cake.

It's pronounced "Torta" (tor-tah). It is pretty much a Mexican sandwich. Here's a great recipe for a homemade one that my mom used to make, as some fast food Mexican restaurants don't make them very authentic.
Recipe:
Grab some Carne Asada from the store (thinly sliced steak) & grill some up in a frying pan after you've seasoned it with some Lowry's Garlic Salt. If you want to throw in some purple onions in the pan that would be even better to give the meat some flavor.
When you're done, get a French Bread Sandwich Roll and put some mayo on it. Put it on the grill with the mayo on it to warm the bread.
When it's soft, put your cooked meat in it, throw in your grilled onion, put some sliced tomatoes and fresh sliced avocado in there and you're done!
The torta is also good with some jalapeno peppers (the ones in the can...like "La Costena" Brand...found in the mexican food aisle) on the side. You can take a bit of your torta, and then pick up your jalapeno & take a bite of it too! The taste is phenomenal! All the flavors will make you want more & more!
Of course, this is just my family's recipe, so feel free to experiment with things that you like in it.
You've made me very hungary and ready to go make myself a torta!! Enjoy!

They are delicious Mexican sandwiches filled with grilled meat and lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, avocado. They are warm and really hit the spot. I am not quite sure that if they are served elsewhere than America that the meat is not ground beef or pork or diced chicken. Truly good!!!!
