I would also suggest visits at Nursing Homes. Any of the staff can let you know who does not receive visits. Old people love contact and have wonderful stories to tell. Also, I will usually go to do-it-yourself home centers. Ask to speak with the Garden Manager (or any manager if garden not around) and ask for a donation of the small poinsettia plants. More often than not, they will oblige. Actually if you're going close to Chrsitmas they practically give them away. Check with your local supermarket or super-store and do the same for sweet treats.

Even if you can't manage any donations, a warm hug will suffice...

Wow, that is so nice of you. Holidays are a time for family and my grandfather was in the hospital a few years back for Christmas. His roommate in the hospital room was about 80 years old and didn't have a soul visiting him so when we brought some gifts up for my grandfather we brought him something too and he was really touched by it. I think it was the only present he got that Christmas.

Ya know, everyone always says go to Children's hospitals or pediatric wards, but most of the children I know are spoiled at Christmas with gifts from parents, siblings, grandparents... etc. I think it's our forgotten elderly that have it the roughest this time of year. They remember when they had families and big Christmas get togethers and now due to circumstance they find themselves in their golden years alone. So if you wanted to cheer the sick I say try to cheer the hospital-bound elderly because they could certainly use some cheering up all year long not just at Christmas.

Call up a local hospital and ask if they have any patients that they have noticed doesn't recieve very many or any visitors. As long as they are not in ICU (which is for family only during very specified hours) they should have no problem with it and when you go take a little plant or something (as long as the person is not on oxygen). It will is sure to cheer up their day. Thanks for the tip, I might just do the same thing.

Call the local hospital and ask for the volunteer co-ordinator. They can probably tell you which wards are safe to visit as far as non-contagious or people who aren't in critical condition. Also, they can register you so other employees know you are a volunteer.

If there's a veteran's hospital in your area, they would probably enjoy your visits very much.

What a great thing to do. Good for you. Merry Christmas.

Yes but some require you register with the local police station if you are going into the childrens areas. If you talk to the local small stores they will usually give you a small items at cost if you want to bring little gifts.

It's a fine gesture, but visit the other eleven months of the year too! People are as sick and lonely in March, as in December.

Yes, its the greatest thing for someone to visit someone in hospital during this holidays seasons. Especially with the kids, they love the accompanion. It gets depressing during Christmass in hospital.
