No other sport in the country allows fighting. I just wonder why it is allowed.

You know what I mean...mixed martial arts, kick boxing, ARE fighting sports. Why not allow fighting in football, basketball, etc. And in other sports if a fight breaks out, the ref (umps, etc) dont wait for a safe time to intervene, they stop it quickly, before someone gets bloody.
I guess the premise of my question is what is about hockey, or the history of hockey that makes the fights "part of the game".

That's a good question. I think it's because the NHL as well as the fans (especially the canadian ones! lol) have always wanted the game of hockey to remain just that, stay the same throughout time. Back in the day, it was ok to fight in the game, it's entertaining, so why get rid of it? They got a lot of slack from fans about changing everything. You'll hear lots of talk about "The New NHL" and all the rules they have changed recently. Don Cherry was just talking about it tonight on Coach's Corner: they want to get rid of checking all together because it's dangerous and deadly. He said, not one player in the history of NHL has died because of getting checked. But one has died for blocking pucks, so let's get rid of the goalie next! But I agree, why change an entertaining sport, if that's what the fans want? It's good for their ratings!

It's not allowed. Fighting is penalized by a 2 minute minor for instigation, a 5 minute major for actually throwing punches, potentially anothe 5 minute major for drawing blood (best rule ever) and usually a full game misconduct penalty.
The only reason they let them keep going is because those guys are huge and throwing rapid fire haymakers while balancing on 1/8" of a metal blade on a sheet of ice. A puny ref in the mix would get ground up like hamburger!

Ever see someone rush the Mound in Baseball? Do you REALLY think the Umps break it up right away. No if an all out brawl breaks out in baseball they let it go. You can't stop it. In Football and basketball you get pushing matches usually. They don't start as all out fights. In Hockey they drop the gloves and grab each other. There is no pushing and shoving to get in and break it up first.

Fighting is not "allowed" in hockey. It is a 5-min. major penalty. More like it's tolerated. Don't get hung up on it as fighting is way way down from the '40s or '70s.
As far as fights, it would be better if we went back to the non-instigator rule and you'd get more players policing crap like diving and stickwork.

its not allowed you get kicked out of the game for just throwing a punch MOST of the time. Some refs are just more leniant but thats going to change with new rules that USA hockey has come up with

Because it isn't alloowed, it just isn't severly punished. If you fight, the refs wait until they think that it's safe to break up the fight, then I think the players get 5 minute majors, or the maximum allowed time for a penalty

The National Lacrosse League has fighting. Plus, it's a little dangerous to try to break up a fight when you're on skates that're on the ice. And what about baseball? They should have more bench-clearing brawls to put more butts in the seats.

Fighting is allowed, it just gives you a 5 minute penalty. Its for entertainment and because its better for players to get their anger out on the ice instead of attacking them by throwing a cheapshot.
