If the hard drive on your computer is okay the files will still be there. If the hard drive crashed, they might still be there. The first rule in file recovery is 'stop using the computer.' Pull the hard drive out, or have someone do that, and put it in another computer. Run a file recovery program - some are free on the net - such as PCInspector, many cost some $. Run the recovery software and copy the files onto a CD. Then Reload itunes after your computer is fixed and put the files back in the same place they used to be. You may have to re-register your ipod.
The files that are on your ipod now will be fine. Choose options in itunes later that will allow you to upload the music from your ipod to the computer. At least you won't lose everything.

There is a mechanism for getting back all songs that you purchased through the itunes music store. You have to contact apple support, though. As an alternative, the latest versions of itunes allow you to transfer music that you purchased through the itunes music store from your ipod back onto any computer that you have authorized:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/sync/transfer.html
The only problem is that any songs that you did not purchase from itunes music store cannot be transfered back to the computer. You will have to import those songs again from CD.

As far as i know you can make your ipod send the info to your computer. In the advanced tab in itunes there is a command to consolodate library which i'm sure i used once. I have had this problem and lost nothing so just don't update your ipod to an empty itunes.

Did you check in the iTunes library?

If you can't find them, send an email detailing your dilemma to iTunes Support. You just might get lucky.

If the music in your iPod was originally from iTunes, I think you can put back into iTunes library using a 3rd party software. Next time back up your iTunes library and important files.

in case you have the iPod touch, you need to purchase it off of the WiFi iTunes keep. If no longer, you may save it on your computing device, or the subsequent time it updates, it quite is going to develop into corrupt. inspite of the undeniable fact that, there are actually extra value-effective no longer ordinary force and extra storage strategies, including a USB memory stick or an exterior no longer ordinary force (could be for the terrific, with the shortcoming of area on your no longer ordinary force)
