Heavy steering effort combined with a grinding noise sure does look/smell/taste like a failed power steering pump. If the reservoir is low or empty you have your answer - the bearing in the pump starved of lubrication and wore out. Replace the pump and whatever caused the fluid to leak out.

If the reservoir is full but the pump is grinding, it just plain went bad.

If the steering "grabs" or is erratic in steering effort, its the rack that has gone bad.

Try this, when the the PS pump is full of fluid, start the vehicle and use a long screw drive or something similar and have someone turn the steering wheel. When the wheel is turned use the long screw driver and place the tip on the PS pump and the other end on your ear. If it grinds then change your PS pump.

Check the power steering fluid first. If that's not it - it might very well be the pulley.
