I am looking for a laptop that will last me a while. I will use it fo videos (editing/burning/watching) and music and school work, Does anyone have any suggestions of what I should look for? Brands/Models. I am on a budget and was looking more towards a 15" screen. Thanks.

I have a Dell laptop. It has not let me down for the longest time. I use it for the office though, so I'd say the latest models would suffice, just make sure to invest on additional RAM, HDD space and video (GeForce- or Radeon-based would suffice) to ensure optimum performance.

You can also check out the MacBook. It's no secret that when it comes that Mac is good with graphics, videos and music. And the new models are Intel-based (Core 2 Duo), which means you can also install Windows OS and/or even Linux (if you're particular about the OS you use).

one thing to think about when buying any computer is backup service should anything go wrong with it.. first thing to do is check out the service.. in other words find out what their service is like one way to do that is get the phone numbers and ring them or do as you have done here ask questions

now getting back to your question if i was to give points to certain manufactures from 1 to 10 on service it would be like this
DELL 2
HP 6
Compaq 6
Toshiba 8
Acer 7
IBM 7
now it depends on what u want to pay. the more you pay the better the system.. go for a 64 bit system nothing less higher if the pocket will stand it, with a DVD burner double layer if possible and a minimum of 80 gig hard drive for your video editing, don't forget you will need a fast hard drive 7200 rpm also for the vid editing.
to keep your cost down and save your self A LOT of money look at getting Novel Suse Linux 10.1 for you opperating system it leaves windows in the dark... also you get all the software you need for free. come with video editing, Office anti virus networking music you name what you want and you have it all in one package,
Now you can download it off the net for FREE or you can buy it @ $60.00 with support, comes on 1 dvd for the 64 bit or 5 cd's for the 32 bit systems, free updates for life,
try www.Novell.com if you want to download it hope you have broadband.... dial up will take you a year to download LOL
good luck

I think that Dell and HP are both fairly good. IBM it top notch but yu pay for it and gateways is ok I have not seen much about Toshiba though. Steer clear of sony's since they seem to have the most problems from motherboards dieing to battery recalls.

Overall I would say Dell or HP

Sony is great. they are not really on the cheap side, but they will last forever. they are powerful and can handle a variety of applications (if you get the proper model and not the lowest end one) and they have a unique styling. a descent sony for your applications will run around $800-1000

you sound like your a student, so if your really tight on cash, go for a Dell. they look nice and are quite reliable. you can get one for around $500. check out the Inspiron series. mine is several years old and it still runs great.
