You really have 256 MB, your video card is borrowing the missing 12MB. You could get back the 12 MB by buying a better video card, but memory is very cheap these days.
Follow the link below. Crucial (a memory manufacturer has a scanner to look at your system and tell you what you have.

Yes u surely need more RAM. Minimum 250 MB RAM is recommeded for running Windows XP only. So for running other programs u need more RAM. You can`t increase ur RAM by freeing up space or by deleting or using any software. You need hardware, go out and but new RAM. I suggest but 512 RAM instead of 256, bigger buy is better and cheaper.
You have to check with ur computer manual if u have DDR or SDRAM before and if there is a RAM/memory slot free to add up a new RAM stick.
Im not sure tht if u can open ur computer. I will do tht and check tht long like ur hand size long but not wide stick and it will written over it so many things including SDRAM or DDR ! Also if there is a slot free with it (u will see if u open) ! cheers

RAM stands for "random access memory" and comes from "sticks" of memory that plug into your motherboard. Programs use this memory to operate, but are not stored there.. it will not add RAM to do any of the stuff you asked about. However, it might help with speed.
If you look in the case, see if you have any empty slots to add more memory. If the slots are filled, you'll need to swap the stick(s) you have for ones that have more chips (RAM) on them. If in doubt, take the main computer down to a local shop... they'll be glad to add memory. You won't need to take the keyboard, mouse or monitor... they have all that there.
Do you have problems running games or programs now? If not, don't worry about the amount... it's probably close enough.

Well.. First of all. RAM isn't like your hard drive. You can't just delete some things and hope it will free up. Your ram pretty much stays as is fromt he day you put it in till this day. RAM is the place in your computer where information is stored for quick later access. But it doesn't stay in your RAM. It gets deleted. So the only way to get more RAM is to get and get a bigger RAM chip. You can either get a one big RAM chip or you can spend maybe 50 bucks and buy a small one and add it on to the 244mb RAM chip you have. Most computers have a slot called PCI SLOT. Thats where your RAM is. SO! Just look for RAM chips that go in your PCI slot. Doing that you should be fine. Visit the site I gave you. If your computer is like how i picture then this is wut you should be looking for.

Go to a computer and buy more RAM. 512 or 1 GB of RAM will be enough.

You have to go out and buy more RAM. But make sure the type is compatible with your motherboard and make sure you have the slots available.
Deleting more programs just frees up more harddrive space. This is different than RAM.

Gop to any computer store and buy it. But make sure that you know what type of RAM that you have. If you are not familair with this area, the safest thing to do is to arrange to take your computer in and have the store install the RAM for you.

your ram cant be 244. Rams come as 32,64,128,256....
why you need 256 ?
your ram is 256 but it is shared for your graphics. you can increase it by decreasing this from bios. you should get a technician or an expert to do it for you, unless you should definately spoil something
