Andrew Carnegie. Although his greatest success was his corporation US Steel, he worked for railroads as a highly skilled telegraph technician. Through his influential friends, Carnegie also served as government appointee Superintendent of the Military Railways and the Union Government's telegraph lines during the Civil War. Later in his career mass produced cheap steel rail road tracks and built steel bridges for rail roads that were innovative and essential to the industrialization of America. He also owned the company that built large steam locomotives.

Andrew Carnegie was second only to Rockefeller as the wealthiest industrialist in the world.

Could you be thinking of Cornelius Vanderbuilt? He owned New York Central Railroad, among others, and was a key player in the "railroad wars."
