If you are talking about a propane tank, you can go to a store that sells accessories for these types of things and get a strip that sticks on the outside. When hot water is poured on it, the colour changes except where there is additional mass due to the gas.

It depends on the tank size. Gas bottles usually have a gauge indicater unless they are like 5 gallons, you can usually pick it up and feel the wieght of it and shake it a little. The heavier the bottle the more gas it has in it. On my outdoor burner i usually keep a full spare bottle so as not to run out before i'm finished cooking. I hope this helps.

The only way to quantitatively measure the amount of gas left in a bottle without knowing its temperature and pressure is to weigh it.
Volume is irrelevant. You know the volume. It's the volume of the bottle.
Pressure is dependent on temperature. If you DO know the pressure and temperature, you can calculate the mass using a temperature/pressure chart for your gas. Without knowing the pressure and temperature, you're left with:
Weight. The weight, or mass, of the gas stays the same regardless of its temperature and pressure.

Use a pressure gauge. The Hot Water test Strip is a way also. Most folks I know simply use a PSI Gauge inline.

put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes(5-10) then take it out and in a few minuets the condensation on the outside will tell you the level of the liquid

I have noticed when using my Coleman lanterns, when the gas is getting low in the tank, it makes the cabin smell strongly of mercaptan...that's ONE way to tell...

If its outside and if its cold out you can pore warm to hot water on it and it will frost up to where the gas is.
