Different feet do better with select styles. I have weird feet myself and have a lot of trouble finding shoes that don't hurt.
Try and see if the style you want comes in a size wide, if the sides of your feet feel scrunched.
Shoes that lack arch support are a common reason for sore feet. Not only does it flatten your foot and cause orthopedic problems, this can stretch your foot out longer so the toes are crammed tighter against the toe of the shoe.
Another big problem with many shoe factories is that they cut corners to save on materials and the shoes end up a half-size smaller than what they are labled. You might want to try a half-size up and see if that helps.

This might be a result of having, as already suggested, a different arch to that inside your shoe. You can get inserts from a doctor and sometimes shoe shops to match the shape of your foot. It depends where your feet hurt. If you get blisters it may be that your foot it too wide for the shoe or you need a bandaid in the back of your shoe just to stop whatever is rubbing your foot. Also remember that in relation to an occasion one should consider appropriate footwear.

Some shoes take time to break in. If you're still worried after 2-3 weeks, buy some insoles.

well, if they're brand new shoes, then they haven't been broken in to fit the shape of your feet. they're the right size, but they're bumpy in all the wrong places. you have to wear them awhile to mould them into the shape of your feet.

You don't say whether they are laced - but I always found that tying the laces too tight made my feet hurt/ache.
