you don't need to take prenatal vitamins unless you are anemic (you should be eating healthy though)
taking an iron supplement during pregnancy (if you are not anemic) increases your risk of premature labor 4X
Iron deficiency can be a major contributory factor to severe anemia, but evidence that iron deficiency anemia is a causal factor in poor pregnancy outcomes is still lacking.Nevertheless, most experts consider the control of maternal anemia to be an important part of prenatal health care. Elevated hemoglobin, especially in later pregnancy, is also associated with poor pregnancy outcomes.
its nice to hear about an educated doctor... usually they don't know squat about nutrition (thats why they refer patients to me)
a note on folic acid, you do not need to suppliment more to have a healthy baby (unless you are anemic)
you can obtain 100% of your folic acid from: 3/4c total cereal, or 1c rice, or 12oz beef etc. (daily)

I am a nutritionist and a mother.
Yes, you can get all of your vitamins through a proper, well balanced diet but for many pregnant moms it is really hard to meet all of those needs especially if you do not eat well (due to nausea, food aversions, or just simply not liking certain food groups).
I took prenatals with my pregnancy and continue to take them as I am lactating. I would advise to take them. They will not hurt you or your baby. If anything they will give you peace of mind. You can take OTC prenatals or even just a multivitamin until you see your doctor again.
With this being said, it still important to eat a well balanced diet. You cannot form a healthy, full term baby on vitamins alone. Your body will only absorb a small amount of vitamins found in a pill in comparison to eating nutritionally dense food.

I have no idea what kind of doctor you have. WOW. Mine got me on prenatal vitamins ASAP. You could take the Nature Made kind. Also the Flinstone's Vitamins have what you need until you can get some. You really should call back at your doctor and ask why so early??? I received my vitamins when I was 10 weeks pregnant and he said I should of had them earlier like at 6 weeks. He said that everything in the beginning starts to develop and they are extremely important. Good luck. But I would call. You really need vitamins.

I would be suspicious of this doctor. You should be taking prenatal vitamins or at least folic acid supplements from the start. Go get some OTC prenatal vitamins and be wary of this doctor. Good luck!

I have never heard of anything like that before! Wow! I started taking Perfect Prenatal by New Chapter (availiable at the health food store) best vitamin ever because its made from whole food so theres no additives and your body absorbs all of the vitamin so it doesn't make you sick and you can take them on an empty stomach before I even found out I was pregnant.
Then in the last trimester I started taking Fish oil and flax seed capsules because I read that they make your baby SMART SMART SMART...let me just tell you, my daughter is 6 weeks old and at 1 month she was rolling over from her back to her stomach. I strongly recommend both. Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

ITs never too early! I would try to get a second opinion. However, I started taking prenatal pills when i was about 7 weeks pregnant.

TOO EARLY??? That is the craziest thing I have ever heard. You can buy prenatal vitamins at Walmart and other drug stores. i can't take prenatal vitamins so I take 2 flintsones with iron every day. I did this with my last pregnancy and he came out healthy. I am taking extra calcium and vitamin c with this pregnancy. I think I would find another doctor since they said it was too early. now is the most important time. good luck!

I would suggest at least taking a folic acid, this is the state of pregnancy where you will need it most. We started taking prenats before we even tried to get pregnant, took them instead of the pill.

At walmart they sell a 240 count bottle of prenatal's for only $9.00 I use them and my sister in law used them too, they are great and very important the first couple of weeks, the folic acid in them can protect your baby from certain birth defects

go to the health food store and get some, they absorb better than ones from say walmart... next switch drs.... you should be taking prenatal vitamins from the moment you find out you are pregnant, if not while trying!! If he didn't even tell you that then he is not competent.....
