Dolphins and whales are both mammals. The dolphin is a different species, from the whales. Like it was said previously the killer whale, is a closer relative to the dolphin, because they both have teeth. Most whales don't have teeth, but have something like a sift, to filter the krill that they eat from the water.

They both belong to the order cetacea which include. whales, dolphins, and porpoises.
But there are differences between a whale and a dolphin.
Whales attain larger size(70 ft.), they do not have projected snout, they have two nostrils, they don't squeak like dolphins, and they are marine.Whales have no teeth, instead they have whalebones which are horny plates on the sides of upper jaw to strain small animals

Dolphins are smaller(7 ft.) with a snout bearing teeth. They have one nostril. They live in rivers and in brackish waters.Sperm whale is like dolphins in the above characteristics.
