It doesn't, however as some have already said, the skin dries after we die and retracts which may give the appearance that fingernails and hair have become longer. I found a site that answers quite a few questions in regards to death, and if you watch A&E once in awhile they have some good shows that involve murders and such and they show you what happens to our bodies as we decompose on body farms (body's donated to science for froensic study to help learn more about the process of death) To learn a little more about body farms that are used fro forensics and science visit my second site listed.

This is actually not true. It is an optical illusion based on the shrinkage of skin and tissue around the hair follicle. The same thing for fingernails. Hair and fingernail growth stops upon death.

because as long as you have skin on your body even after death your hair will continue growing. when, however, your skin decays and there is no more left your hair wont grow anymore because there is nothing to grow from!

hair does not carry on growing when we die. it only looks like it does. the reason for this is because of decomposition. when the skin shrinks back through this process it reveals the hair which is underlying. the roots of hair and also of the nails starts a few millimetres under the surface of the skin so that what you are seeing when you observe decomposing bodies is the skin going back to the roots. it is physically impossible for hair and nails to carry on growing as they need nutrition to carry on the process of growth.

Actually skin decomposes after death so it shrinks making hair and nails look like they're growing

hair doesnt grow when you die i thought it did untill i asked the embalmer at work he said that when you die your skin shrinks as you loose liquid and the skin starts to rot or decompose then the small hairs say on a face would make it seem you have a bit of stubble but it doesnt actually grow hope this helps you

A Hair Folicle is exactly what it says it is, a Follicle. A Follicle is produced or rather the result of dyeing and dead cells. That hair on your head right now, and all over your body, is nothing more than dead tissue.
But that dead tissue is a billion $ industry, so Science does not teach that to young students.

when someone dies, the body loses water and the skin shrinks which makes it look like hair and nails have grown a small bit.
