Go to your local guitar/musical instrument store and buy a finger strengthening tool.talk to whoever is working there about what you are looking for and they will set you up with the proper one as they come in different levels of resistance for different types of players. It's nothing more than four spring loaded pads that you push down against the springs to build finger strength and the underside of it is shaped so that your hand is positioned like you are holding the neck of a guitar.

It really depends on what KIND of guitar you are playing and what kind of MUSIC you want to play. If you're playing acoustic guitar and want to strum a lot of chords, then you really just need to toughen up the skin on your fingertips by practicing. If you want to play single note melodies on electric guitar, practice with chromatic scales (one fret at a time). But remember, in whatever you play, it actually doesn't take much FORCE at all to hold the strings down, if you do it correctly, the weight of your arm is really all you need- you just have to make sure you're only using the muscles you absolutely HAVE to, keep everything else relaxed and have fun!

There is a thing you can buy at the guitar store or a music shop that you squeeze to strengthen your hands. I'll ask my husband what it is called and edit this later. It has 2 flat pieces with 4 springs in between them.

whether it's right or not, my guitar teacher always told me it's better to sit around doing scales to strengthen your hand than to use one of those goofy contraptions. put heavy strings on your guitar and just do scales with your fret hand while you're watching tv. you'll be surprised how much better you get while you don't even realize it.

Play a lot. I wonder if practicing on a guitar with high action would help.
