SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse University professor Arthur C. Brooks is about to become the darling of the religious right in America -- and it's making him nervous.

The child of academics, raised in a liberal household and educated in the liberal arts, Brooks has written a book that concludes religious conservatives donate far more money than secular liberals to all sorts of charitable activities, irrespective of income.

In the book, he cites extensive data analysis to demonstrate that values advocated by conservatives -- from church attendance and two-parent families to the Protestant work ethic and a distaste for government-funded social services -- make conservatives more generous than liberals.

The book, titled "Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism" (Basic Books, $26), is due for release Nov. 24.

When it comes to helping the needy, Brooks writes: "For too long, liberals have been claiming they are the most virtuous members of American society. Although they usually give less to charity, they have nevertheless lambasted conservatives for their callousness in the face of social injustice."

Good question and great opportunity to express my view that social injustice should not be handled by charity but by society as a whole through taxes.
If you leave your whole social safety net to charities you get too much charities pushing a political or religious agenda on the poor.
It's also about the belief people are entitled to have decent living conditions and that it's not privilege but a basic human right.

the things he cites have NOTHING TO DO with generosity?

"In the book, he cites extensive data analysis to demonstrate that values advocated by conservatives -- from church attendance and two-parent families to the Protestant work ethic and a distaste for government-funded social services -- make conservatives more generous than liberals."

what do any of those things have to do with giving back? maybe attending chuch, if you give to the church, and the church is active in the community, but that's a reach at best only going off attendance...

just because someone has a work ethic, it doesn't make them generous... just because two people work in the family... it doesn't make them generous... and just because people hate government programs, it CERTAINLY doesn't make them generous...

generosity is how much money and time they give... period

it sounds like someone who wants to make money selling books to conservatives to make them feel better...

I can buy a Michael Moore book that says the president is a crook and also "cites extensive data analysis"... would you believe that?

Aren't both liberals and conservatives the same anyway. The reason the democrats won the mid terms is because they appointed conservative candidates in typically republican states. So the democrats are just conservatives in disguise. Until America gets some real politicians nothing will ever change, the rich will get richer and the poor poorer, so sad for the land of oppotunities.

What you don't understand is the Liberals don't like the causes that Conservatives give to. They want high taxes and they want to allocate the money where they see fit, they don't want you to have the right to decide what causes you think are worthy.

Trouble is, the wealthy libs are like any other wealthy people, they do their best to keep their taxes low but are perfectly happy with the people in the middle to paying their fair share. Which they will then allocate in a manner that they see as fair (because they are so much smarter than you and me).

I think "joy rider" is a little joyful from conservative spankings, not that I quite understand her, and I doubt anyone else does also.

I am a conservative who contributes to charities, not considered a "religous right" but i do. I think that is what you asked

Listen Babe, Conservatives and Liberals in the Government don't give a crap about Americans. When I vote I always vote for Al Bundy, he's not real but fits my views. Neither Conservatives or Liberals care about America but only care about God, AKA $$$$$$$$$$.
