Yes, and like previous answerers, it actually sears through my own soul when it is emotional pain they have experienced. Especially when it happens to small children. I just want to alleviate the anguish they feel. If I have caused it to an adult, apologies can't go far enough, but if someone else caused it, something as simple as a hug, and a few kind words can be the most effective treatment.
If that pain is physical, I can sympathize, and sometimes try to do something to mitigate the pain rationally, or at least perform first aid or get medical care for them.

You bet I have. When I had my operation in 1985 and the child on the ward, who was just the kindest soul ever, passed my way. He had cancer and knew was going to leave this plane we call Earth, he talked to me everyday and consoled me in my time of fear. He died the morning of my operation.
