Yes, you put it in the water. You can also use sugar. Many people, when they get a bunch of flowers delivered will put aspirin in the water of the vase. Apparently it helps the flowers, or tree in this case, deal with the shock of cutting and transport.

Aspirin, sugar, and 7Up all do the same thing- keep the capiilary action of the tree going so it can take in water and avoid drying out fast.

yes and boil the water the warmer the water the longer the sap stays moist which helps sustain the life of the tree.
