150. I just did 60+60+30 (half of sixty)

There are lots of short cuts that you can use to get the answer, but if you want to master any and all percentage problems, set up your percent ratio where x is the number that you are looking for and 40 is the percentage of x that 60 represents. The equation should look like this:

60/x = 40/100

Solve for x by cross multiplying:

(60) (100) = (40)(x)
6000 = 40 x
6000/40 = x
150 = x

So, 60 is 40% of 150.

You can use this formula to solve any percent question. As you master the skill by understanding the concept, you can use shortcuts. Note: If the question was what number is 40% of 60, you would have put x in the numerator and 60 in the denominator of the first fraction. I also liked the way the above poster, Puzzling, explained the process. Setting up the equation exactly how the problem reads is another way to get the answer.

i learned how to this with an "is over of" type of thing.
"is" = 60 and "of" = the unknown number, x. 40% goes over 100 because 40% is the same as 40/100. so it loosk like this

60 / X = 40 / 100 then criss-cross multiply.
(X * 40) = (60 * 100) solve.
40X = 6000 solve for X by dividing 40 on both sides
40X / 40 = 6000 / 40 the 40's canel out on the left side. then solve the right side
X = 6000 / 40 or 150
X = 150

Let the number be x
then according to question 40% of x=60
that is (40/100)*x=60
0.4*x=60
to remove 0.4 from left hand side we will divide both side with 0.4
so we will get

x=60/0.4=150

so the number is 150

150, divide 60 by .40........to get 60 you would divide 150 by .40 right? so to get the number do the opposite. does that make sense? sorry i'm not very good at explaining things

My answer is 150. The thing you are trying to do in this equation is make the equation like this : 60=.4X. the reason why i put x is because that you are solving for that number. try to make x to be alone. so what u do is divide .4 from .4 and divide it to 60.. you should get your answer 150. it should look like this: 150=x

Let X- be the missing number
-first convert the 40% into decimal
(0.4)(X)=60
-by division property of equality, divide both sides by 0.4 to cancel the 0.4 on the left side so the variable will be alone.
(0.4)(X)/0.4=60/0.4
-when you do the division property of equality, the 60 on the right side will be also divided by 0.4 so the answer is 150
-X=150
*60 is the 40% of 150
