In Montreal, the number system refers to the TOTAL numbers of rooms inside the apartment, including the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, etc. The "half" refers to the bathroom.

So, a 2 1/2 could either be a studio apartment with a separate kitchen, or it could be a one bedroom apartment with a small kitchen that is not separated from the living room by any walls.

A 3 1/2 would likely be a one-bedroom. A 4 1/2 would be a two bedroom, etc. Sometimes landlords will try ti exaggerate the size of the apartment....for instance, they may call it a 4 1/2 when it only has one bedroom if the living room is really big.

A 2 1/2 has a separate bedroom and a bathroom, and the rest of it (living room, kitchen) all one room.

A 3 1/2 usually has a separate bedroom and a bathroom, and some kind of distinction between the kitchen and the living/dining room, although they may not be quite separate.

A 4 1/2 is usually like a 3 1/2 but with two bedrooms.

The 1/2 refers to the bathroom as far as I know.
