Most gold occurs naturally as a pure metal. While large chunks of it look just like you would imagine gold to look, small flecks distributed through ore may also look black- or ruby-coloured. Sometimes the gold in ore is microscopic in volume and therefore invisible, for all practical purposes. Follow the link for a picture or two of ore if you're interested.
