I'm the manager of a hat store. We had an Audit and some hats were missing. My manager kept asking me where the hats went and told me I must be an idiot not to know where. He asked me to explain all returns on hats that were missing and nothing showed that I had taken them. I know that I didn't steal them and nothing shows that I have. I feel that he accused me of taking them. Should I contact my human resources and tell them (also letting them know he called me an idiot).

You have several courses of action open to you. You can be rash and just go straight to HR with a complaint. You can write to HR and copy your manager with the allegation or you can take the considered path and approach your manager and tell him straight that being accused of stealing is a very serious allegation that needs to be substantiated and that being called an idiot without justification is offensive. Unless an official complaint is made and/or an apology received you will be taking the matter up with HR. This way you give your manager the chance to save face and that may yield results for you.

Do bear in mind that if a thief is good they will have covered their tracks well. If you've done your job properly and still missed it, who's to say where the theft took place? The best placed person to cover their tracks would be the auditor!

Contact your HR about the verbal abuse and the accusations of theft, which are inappropriate to say the least. But, you should be aware, that as MANAGER of the store, it is your job to know what goes on with the employees and that if an audit goes wrong, you should expect to some extent your butt will be in the ringer, regardless of whether or not you actually stole anything.

Why are you still working for him?

You have been violated. It is up to you what you do from here. But it will be your word against his word.

If he has done this and talked to you this way he has probably done it to others. Document everything and file it with Human Resources.

Yes, I definitely would. People are so mean and think that they can do anything with a little bit of power. You do not seem like a person that deserves this type of garbage. REPORT THE JERK!!!

I would say you should try resolving it with your manager first and if that doesn't work you can contact HR.
