The rule of thumb is 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length- 80 gallons, or a mostly-filled 100 gallon tank or tub.
Most of us use big Rubbermaid-type tubs or even kiddie pools for out larger turtles.

Katie06 IS WRONG. A turtle does not grow to the size of the aquarium. If you put your turtle in a small aquarium it will still outgrow it. For aquatic turtles it's 10 gallons per inch which I know was already stated. My turtle is just over 5 inches and in a 55 gallon for now. If your turtle is female than you will have to invest in a much larger tank.

That is animal neglect if you keep a turtle in a 10 gallon tank that is supposed to get to a foot or so or whatever just to let katie06 know... the MINIMUM is 10 gallons of water (NOT tank size itself) so 1 100 gallon tank will suit your needs quite well, not a 30 gallon. Not a 75 gallon. Not a 55 gallon. Here is a good site for turtles...http://turtlesale.com
You have to scroll down and look to the right for the fourm, but I myself am a member there and the people there are very helpfull.

The aquarium will depend on which type it is. If water turtul than 30 inches long would be good.If land turtul than 40 inches long.
