A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

scientifically according to Rayleigh's law
scattering power is proportional to 1/(wavelength)raised to the power 4
as blue light has 1/2 the wave length of red it will be 16 times more than red light or in other words blue light has highest scattering power in the visible spectrum

because the white (all colored) light is absorbed by the atmosphere. And as the light is absorbed all colors but blue are absorbed and that's why the sky seems blue.
