Nope it's normal I have had many white English/Literature teachers who studied the African-American studies. I think you should go for it.

Acceptable to whom? It's hardly the norm, but it's not unheard of either. I had a professor in college who was white and a scholar in African American studies. I also had several white profs who taught portions of courses with African American themes. At my school, you couldn't major in Af Am. You had to major in history or literature or sociology and do a concentration in Af Am studies. I knew a few white students who did that

I think it is great. All the time people study cultures and groups not their own. You may find some classmates wondering why you are there, but others will embrace you. The most importnat thing you can do is to make some friendships with others following the same course of study. I know that the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. would have accepted you.

Not sure too many of us do it, but I don't think its because we don't want to but a fear of being the only white kid in the class and not being accepted.
At my high school we have an African American studies class and I've considered taking it, but then it just seemed like I wouldn't be accepted so I didn't.
But, I say go for it!

i think it is great. the only way to end division is for people to feel free to be who they are. a white person has just as much right to study african american issues as any race. maybe you can help bridge the gap! my husband is white -- studying us history with a minor in african american studies. he is going to be a high school history teacher. go for what you want!

its respectable thing for white people to be interested and concerned in African-American culture, its good for the world if you seek understanding, and maybe help bring people together in harmony

It's good you embrace African-American studies, you should do anything you love, and not let anything stop you.
