I think that the truth may cause cognitive dissonance if it conflicts with what they believe. No one likes to hear information that challenges what we believe in whole-heartedly. Also, people will seek out peripheral information that confirms what they believe and information that debunks the conflicting information in order to abate or eradicate the cognitive dissonance they are experiencing.
It is a psychological defense mechanism that we all possess, in order to shield us from feeling mental/emotional pain.

Its easier for people to handle a lie. Then they don't have to face the real problem. Truth is too hard for some. A lie, is something they take comfort in. It stops them from having to face the truth. They know what's true and what is not. And they'll believe witch ever one they like more.

1)Either because they love to be the one who's always right. And never want to be wrong.
2)They know the truth but, they might not want to believe in it because they're afraid that the truth just might hurt, even though the truth sometimes set you free.
3) Or this person just might be so in love or something that they're blind to what ever the truth is. Because they just don't see it.

Most of the times, they are afraid to accept the truth... or the truth is painful and the lie seems to be the easy way out... mostly it happens with the people who are into escapist mode at that particular time if their lives and do not have the guts or courage to face the truth...
truth is mostly bitter and harsh... lies seem to be rosy and dream like.... so its easy to believe...

I have been lied about so much that it cost the people I love alot of heartache and justifiable hate to the grave...
My sister in law lied about me because she did it every chance she got over and over and over again. She got so good that when a helping hand was needed and the truth, she whoopered to the point of crushing a persons life out of them.
They say that what goes around, comes around. It never has for her and her husband.
They say that when you lie about a person or situation, you can't sleep at night. I sleep ok. I know what is the truth.
If a person is misinformed, it is one thing. Rectify the situation.

I believe this is the answer that you seek. It is the psychologically correct term for the ability to have two conflicting beliefs, and chosing the one that makes you the most comfortable.
