Snakes move by flexing the muscles from side to side. I've seen a startled snake appear to go backwards whilst moving from side to side, but not very far and then it moves off in a forward motion.

no a snake cant move backwards only forward and i think side to side

Mine do. I have 4 snakes and they all back up if startled or are unsure of what is ahead.

they can pull backwards if startled but cant actually move backwards as they would damage their belly scales.

No.A snake can only move forwards.The snake is a forward reptile.
