I like Dick's Sporting Goods. They carry a lot of shoes, and many from the $40-60 range. Brands like New Balance, Nike, Aasics (I like running shoes, but they've got all types).
If you don't have one, are there any other sporting goods megastores in your area? They probably have similar selections. In fact there's a bunch of sporting goods stores all owned by the same company, including Dick's, and they're all about the same. They just have different names.
Dick's is online at http://www.dickssportinggoods.com I got a pair of shoes that were too big over the internet, so I had to pay shipping to send them back. I'm going to try to buy my shoes from a store for awhile.

Payless Shoes has some really cute shoes out right now... and reasonable! I think I got my last sneakers at Carnaval Shoes, they have good deals sometimes.

If you live in Canada the best store would be S'il Vous Plait. If you live in the states I think you should go to Payless.
