I absolutely agree with you! I had the type of parent that didn't tell me anything about my cycles or sex in general, I learned it all from friends or books....its a shame that in this day and age parents are afraid by talking about sex--it makes it seem like they are condoning it. Well I have a 6yr old daughter, and plan to give her the talk when she is old enough, and I hope that someday if and when she has a daughter, she does the same.
Edited to add:
I knew a girl in high school who was pregnant, she didn't figure out she was pregnant till the 8th month! I was like "WOW, what did you think all that kicking was?"she said "gas" I had to walk away....it just seemed unbelievable.

I think part of the problem is that young women don't LISTEN to people who know, they listen to their peers like "you can't get pregnant the first time you have sex". Common sense as well as reality say otherwise but thousands of young women will get pregnant beleive that wive's tale. Or "You can't get pregnant while you're on your period". Or "you can't get pregnant if you're on the pill". I love that one because I was ON the pill both times I got pregnant.
Also they are so totally unaware that bloating, cramps, breast tenderness, nausea are not just symptoms of pregnancy, they can indicate all sorts of illnesses, some of which are VERY serious and just because a home pregnancy test came up negative doesn't mean there isn't something wrong. I started learning about my own body during pubert because my mother refused to talk about anything. I didn't rely on information from my friends I would go to the doctor, I went to the school nurse, I read and watched the biological and anatomy programs on the PBS television stations. By the time I was 16 I knew when I was ovulating, and I knew when my "peak" time to get pregnant was by the time I was 21. It's not that the education isn't there, it's that those getting it aren't listening and paying attention.

It really is disturbing.
Granted I was someone who had pregnancy tests not work for them, had and early miscarriage, AND am 8 months pregnant with a period baby, but honestly and truely iam one of a very very few people who have that sort of thing happen. And i certainly never thought it would.
I wish more girls would take the time to ask their doctors or teachers or mother questions. Or atleast read a book or watch PBS or National Geographic.
I also cant understand how girls dont know that they dont cycle like the tide, and they can skip periods for absolutely no medical reason. It doesnt mean theyre pregnant. I know I certainly have.
its really annoying, I do agree with you. Its not so much unnerving how many women think certain things will get you pregnant, as much as its unnerving they thing certain things WONT get them pregnant.
Like the pull out meathod, or having sex near your period. Its just ignorance...

Well I'm glad I am not the only one asking these kinds of questions. I am a teacher...so I am asked and hear lots of stupid questions. I am of the opinion that children are not being taught certain things because of fanatic "PC" people. And I'm not talking about just conservatives or just liberals. I am talking about people who don't think about the benefit of our children in education, but about what others will say or think...or even sue them for. If we could teach our children things they really need to know, like how not to get pregnant at 14, we'd be in a much better place. As for your friends who think weird things...perhaps they were once my student and, unfortunately I couldn't say or teach them what should have been vitally important. Finally, I also think parents have a lot to do with the stupidity of our culture. Think about it: the carefree/careless people of the 70s and 80s are the parents of young adults today (including you and I; I am 23). With their carefree attitude I highly doubt much education was going on within the household. Couple that with lack of education in the classroom and that is a receipe for disaster. Fortunately, this is all just the opinion of someone in the education system...

Completely agree with you. I think what happens is that these girls hear it from someone else so they dont take the time to find out if its right or wrong. This is forum is a great example for the weird things people say both questions and answers. Sometimes it scares me that these same people are gonna be parents. I guess everyone learns with age and experience.

im 22 and have heard some very silly stuff like leaking nipples when you get your period!
im 9wks pregnant and so many 'older' people think im stupid. im the eldest of 8 have probably got more babysitting, nappychanging, child careing experience than most first time mums.(i know its diferent being a mum but this is a very good start)
its probably all to do with there home life. i learnt bout my body from my mum she taught me a lot even bout pregnancy. most of it thouhgh is common sense.
it has to do with parenting! some parents give good advice and encourage learning others dont!
i was lucky

i am 33 weeks pregnant. when i go to the clinic to get my check ups, they send me to a class, that talks about our bodies and how they work. i help the teacher with the class, cause i have most of the answers like she does...and there are so many ppl who dont know how things work. and not just the 18 year olds that sometimes show up, but i mean women and men in their 20s and 30s. its really sad. but i do agree with you, at some point in your life you have to want to learn about something. but how did you go through school and not learn this, is what i'd like to know. you grew up with your body lol how come you dont know how it works? its really sad.

I completely agree. How can you be in your 20s and not know how your body works or how you get pregnant.
Read a book, search the web, ask your mom.
I think people are just awful prudish and don't want to be embarassed.
