A very impersonal, but loved gift that I use in Yankee Swap and for general gift giving is brownies in a jar. Allrecipes.com has some great recipes for this, and it's cheap, easy, and will be fought over. Basically, get a 2 quart jar and layer the dry ingredients for brownies in it, then tie on a tag with the recipe to add eggs/vanilla/whatever. Very simple, it looks great, and it's always a hit.

Buy a holiday coffee mug and put instant flavored coffees and hot chocolate packets in it. This is something that can definately be used and most can't get enough of coffee/hot chocolate.
