I want her to know that her and her son will be better off, and not to worry, that they will be ok. I am not a close friend, but care for her and want to show her my best wishes. Gift has to be small...she cannot travel with much. I know she needs money, so maybe that would be best.

Money is not a bad idea, but a nice necklace would also be good, something she can wear (travels easy). It's something she can keep for years to come.

How about a journal? It will encourage her to write down some of her feelings. You can even write a note to her on the first page, like a prayer or a note of encouragement...

I saw this really cute Wish Box at Things Remembered. You can get these "stars" with things engraved on them like "hope", etc.
