Let L = age of Larry.

Since mark is 10 years younger than Larry,

L - 10 = age of mark.

Larry's age in 8 years will exceed twice Mark's age 3 years ago by 4 years.

So we take
Larry's age (L),
Larry's age in 8 years (L+8),
Twice Mark's age 3 years ago: 2(L - 10 - 3)
Larry's age in 8 years will exceed .... by 4 years: L+8+4

Equate:

L+8+4 = 2(L - 10 - 3)
L + 8 + 4 = 2L - 20 - 6
L + 12 = 2L - 26
L = 38

Therefore, Larry is 38, and Mark is 28.

Let M = Mark's age now
Let L = Larry's age now

The problem gives us two equations:
M = L - 10
(L + 8) + 4 = 2(M - 3)

Since we know tha M = L - 10, we can substitute this value for M in the other equation, and then solve for L:
(L + 8) + 4 = 2[(L - 10) - 3] --- Simplify...
L + 12 = 2L - 26 --- Subtract L from both sides... (I flipped to keep L on the right)...
L - 26 = 12 --- Add 26 to both sides...
L = 38
L - 10 = 28

ANSWER: Larry is 38 years old and Mark is 28 years old.

CHECK:
38 - 10 = 28 --- Check...
(38 + 8) + 4 = 2(28 - 3)
50 = 50 ... Check...

Hope it helped you to understand the problem.

Mark is 20 and Larry is 30

M=L-10, so L=M+10
L+8=2(M-3)+4
M+10+8=2M-6+4
18+6-4=M
M=20
L=30

Check: 8 years from now Larry will be 38
Marks age 3 years ago was 17
38=2*17+4
