It depends on what kind of sweater you have. If it's a cashmere sweater, you can carefully wash it. If it's wool, you are washing it at your own risk. Tips on hand washing sweaters-
never use chlorine bleach.
Avoid rubbing sweater when washing since that causes pilling. Don't put them in the dryer.
If the sweater is heavy, don't hang it up to dry; that will cause the sweater to lose it's shape. Put it flat on a drying rack and reshape it if the sweater got deformed.
Wash items one at a time.
Don't oversoak the clothes.
Steps to hand wash:
Fill a tub/sink/whatever with warm water
Add a small amount of gentle detergent like Woolite
Put item in basin and twirl it around in a circular motion. DO NOT pull/stretch the item or rub it against itself.
Drain the water out of basin, but hold the item in. Fold the item over and press on the side of the tub to squeeze out excess water. DO NOT WRING ITEM.
Refill basin, but do not add more detergent. Repeat until all suds are gone. Avoid rinsing clothes under running water, which will stretch delicate fabrics out.
Lay clothing on a clean light colored towel
Roll up towel and press down to absorb water. Repeat until damp.
Place garment on drying rack.

Yes you can. You have to lay it flat for it to keep it's shape while drying. Some things you can wash on a gentle cycle in the wash machine and air dry in the dryer.

Silk? No...it will lose its shape. Other fabrics, it's usually okay.
