Okay it is like this, I have had 4 children, now gather I am only 27, so my kids are not that old, so memories are still fresh, first one, they gave me an epidural, it was nice, then I could not feel to push her out, so they turned it off, and then, ooooooowwwwwwwww, it felt like a watermelon was being passed but not through the vaginal area, so yes very very painful, but it is a pain that is soon over, my second, epidural, did not feel nothing, third, I was at a 2 when i got to the hospital, I stayed in a wait room til I got to a 3 which took several hours to dialate that one cm, then when I hit 3 they took me straight to my labor room, by the time I got there, no lie, I was dilated to a 9, I told them the baby was going to fall out and they said no dear you are only at a 3, I told them the hell I was, they felt, and then they new baby would be here in a moment, but I told them I would not push her out til I had an epidural, cause I remembered that pain from the first baby. they did not want to give me one cause you are not suppose to get one once you pass 6 cm, but they did, and after that no pain, my fourth one, was my biggest, now mind you, I am only 5 ft tall, weighing around 120, my last baby was 8 pounds 10 and a half oz. I layed at home all night til I finally couldn't take it anymore, when I got to the hospital this time, I was at a 6, got my epidural, (best one I ever had), could not feel my toes nothing, Came time to deliver, I was sleeping through it, they would have to jolt me to push, I almost had to have a cesearean on that one. Luckily it all worked out. I never felt to much pain. All i am saying is epidurals, are Gods gift to women, Hope this helped ease your mind. Good Luck

It's natural to be scared when you've never done something before. And, when all you hear are horror stories that makes it even worse!
Labor and birth are painful, but it is NOT an excruciating kind of pain. It comes and it goes, and comes and goes. It starts out mild (unless you get induced) and gradually gets worse. Once you get completely dilated it is better, the contractions space back out again, and don't last as long. Some women think pushing feels good. When the head is coming out there is some burning, but this is over quickly.
Pain is not the bad thing about labor. It is fear and fatigue. Labor is hard, physical work. The common practices in the hospital make things worse. Most women feel much better when they are up and moving around, changing positions and just doing what feels right. A woman's body knows what to do and it does it best when we don't interfere with it.
No one ever wants to hear this but I will keep saying it because it is true - yes, there are drugs to help with pain but they ALL HAVE SIDE EFFECTS. They all will pass to your baby. Nurses and doctors who work in hospitals have no idea usually in the difference in babies who's mothers don't have drugs compared to babies with no drug exposure. There is a huge difference in the alertness and bonding when mothers and babies have a natural labor and birth. You can go here and read a great article written by Henci Goer (author of The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth and Obstetric Myths vs Research Realities)
http://www.midwiferyservices.org/infoforparents.htm#epidural
I suggest taking some GOOD childbirth classes. (Not the hospital ones.) Bradley, Birthing From Within, and Hypnobirthing are all good. Classes can really help with your fears and teach you ways to cope with labor that will not hurt you or your baby.
Good luck

wow nothing like scaring her to death.
yes it does hurt, but as I told my husband, its a movable kind a pain, the actual worst part is the labor....you can get medications that will help and even stop all pain (epidural, demerol) now demerol has a nasty nausea and dizzy side effect, epidural involves a pretty large needle to the back, but you will never see it and it really doesnt hurt at all considering the labor pains. I have 4 kids, the last two were natural, it wasn't bad.
Don't be scared, you know deep down there will be some pain, but think of the joy you will have when you see your baby.
Good luck to you, and its totally normal to be nervous about labor, each time I was.

As far as it hurting when the baby comes out...not if you get an epidural! :-)
I was scared too before my firstborn (even a little before my second), so I understand your feelings. Not to blow smoke...it is "uncomfortable" to say the least, at least until you get the epidural. After that, it's a cakewalk, although pushing can be exhausting, especially when you can't feel your legs because of the epidural AND you haven't eaten for 10 hours except ice chips. I would suggest you talk candidly with your obstetrician about his or her policy with regard to how soon they will give the go ahead for your epidural. Some docs require you to be 3 centimeters dilated...some require 5 cm...if you're uncomfortable with your doctor's requirements, find another doctor. There is no reason that you shouldn't have the epidural as soon as you wish. Just make sure to tell the doctor right away, as it takes time for them to call the anesthesiologist and time for him or her to arrive at the hospital because they are not always right there on-hand.
Anyway, have faith that you'll do great, and look forward to this with anticipation instead of dread...women have been doing it since the beginning of time and you will be great!
God bless.

I have had 4 children & all natural with no pain medication. No epidural.
Check into some Lamaze classes or birthing classes. This will really help you deal with the pain when the time comes to give birth to your precious little baby.
It feels like a lot of pressure like a bad stomach ache. Then you feel like you have to go poop really bad. When the Doctor says push you push just like if you were trying to have a bowel movement. Your little sunshine comes into the world & you are so relieved. Seeing the little one who has been moving & kicking you, is the best feeling in the whole wide world!!! Don't worry you will be OK!

I won't lie..it hurts like hell. It's an undescribable pain. The only good thing about it is when the baby comes out it's like the pain instantly vanishes. You still have very mild contractions to deliver the after birth but it's no comparison. When I have my son I didn't even remember what the pain was like the second he came out. I started crying and then I got to hold him and I felt it was all totally worth it. Try not to worry. Just think..if we really remembered what the pain felt like there wouldn't be women having more than one child! Good luck!

YES! But definitely Epidural helps...I dont know how our moms did it without.....Also it might come as a huge surprise but sometimes labor and delivery feels a lot like a huge bowel movement....I kept thinking I might embarass myself on the delivery table, but it was really the baby weighing down on the rectum....that was a bit of a shock.....
The whole thing is a blur and one pain melts into the other....you will be fine....don't think about it too much....
