Can this be done in Windows? For a personal journal, could I use Word?

You can use a password in Word - when you are saving your file, in the save as dialog box, click on "Tools" (top right hand corner of the Window.
Select "Security Options"
Now you can set a read and a write password to prevent people from reading the document, or from modifying the document.
