It depends on which period of slavery you're talking about.
Most people automatically associate "slavery" with the plight of African-American slaves in post-colonial United States. While it is certainly the best known, slavery has been known since ancient times. Romans and Greeks feature a lot of slaves in their culture back then. Remember Spartacus? He was a slave who lead a huge rebellion. Remember Gladiator the movie? All of the gladiators were slaves.
Different cultures define slavery differently, due to different reasons. The Greeks allow people to sell themselves into slavery to repay debts and such. After a set period, the slave will be freed. Romans, on the other hand, usually catch their slaves during military campaigns. Those are practically never freed.

Slaves are an effecient way to run a business.
Especially a farm.
Free labor. Just pay for a couple scraps of food a day and give them a shack. And if one slacks off or wants a better treatment, you beat ituntil its almost dead. EZ money.
Thats how America became a super power. Our economy grew 1000 fold in just 40-50 years.

there were many reasons for slavery... people were too lazy to start farming themselves and because in when the europeans went to the americas they brought diseases so the native americans died. then they went to africa for slaves, and they worked much harder... of course this practice spread and they found many other uses of slaves:
they hated them for their skin color
they made them servants
the slaves were worth money so they sold them
the "whites" viewed slaves as dirty people so they would have them do all the dirty work that they needed done...
it wasn't only african americans that were slaves-- some white people even became servants, but i am unsure why..
hope this helps

For one thing and one thing only. The white people back then (I myself am white) were so lazy and couldn't get everything done in one day so they got slaves to do the work. That and the whole control issue.

Good God!
Based on the ignorance, illogic, and stupidity expressed by most of the respondents to this question, American is an accelerated state of decline, perhaps irrevocable.
The American education system, judged by some of these answers, has collapsed and totally failed to produce educated citizens capable of carrying our nation forward.
God help us all!

Free labor. It was a effiecient system since they didn't have to pay the labors for very hard work.

because it sucks to pick cotton, it's full of thorns, and it's hot in the south, better to sit on the porch and drink lemonade
