(some of my friends are) but there seem to be so many lesbians who are so nasty looking, very manly, fat, etc....do they think they look ok, or do they want to look ugly, maybe in a subconcious way, so as to scare men???

Huh? No, lesbians don't plan their wardrobe around a desire to frighten people who own penises.

First off, let's get it out the way- no, of course not. Nobody, I imagine, wants to look ugly. And lesbians could care less about 'scaring away men'. Honestly- the way people dress and look is for expressing themselves and looking good to others, not to try and frighten people.

From what I hear, most lesbians who are manly/butch (that sounds like what you're describing) dress for comfort and what feels right to them. They don't want the frills and lace and pink- they feel best in men's clothing or androgynous stuff. Same with not wearing makeup or cutting their hair short- that feels more right to them than long, gussied hair or wearing makeup. There are lots of femme lesbians who are the exact opposite- they love that stuff and are usually 'straight-acting' (you wouldn't be able to tell they were gay unless they said so). So I suppose the question is if butch lesbians are looking 'ugly' to scare away men, why aren't the femme ones?

Moreover, remember that beauty is subjective. It's assumed that the only pretty woman is a feminine one, but I have to tell you, as a bisexual woman, that nothing does it for me better than a gorgeous butch woman- very masculine and manly. And considering the number of butch-femme lesbian couples, a lot of women like that, too. We talk about men hating that look, but from what I've heard, lots of butches actually get hit on by men! Who knows why that is, exactly, but they think they look good to some people. 'Nasty looking' is how you see them, but others go ga-ga for it. A lot of women don't mind- or even prefer- larger ladies. I've noticed that the lesbian community is very open and accepting of all different types of beauty.

That's what I think. Hope it makes sense!

I don't know why some people choose to dress and act differently. I think that like any community, the gay community has their own cultural aspects and this includes how they choose to look. You have proboblay noticed that in general, blacks and whites have different styles. there are always exceptions and even if someone seems "ugly" to you they may see it differently because everyone's idea of beauty is different. there are plenty of ugly straight people too. I think when you are dressing to impress boys you may take a different course of action than if you are looking to catch the attention of other women.

i actually do not ideas. as long as they could provide a secure, chuffed, reliable and worrying surroundings then sure, of direction they could. Why? because i don't think of someone's sexual activities (as long as they are legal) might want to denote what someone is like as a make sure. i in my opinion do not care if the father and mother scream about what they do of their "inner most life" from the roof tops, some instantly couples do this. yet in the adventure that they are keen to placed the artwork in, then why the heck no longer?

I know some very ugly straight people. Sexual preference has nothing to do with it.
